How can the circulation of data, knowledge, and ideas be facilitated in a given territory? Recent literature on the notion of the creative city provides a rich conceptual framework for understanding the importance of the “middleground” as an intermediary platform for the exchange of ideas, data and knowledge, connecting the formal entities of the “upperground” (companies, research departments, administrative units, etc.) with the informal collectives of the “underground” (informal communities, creative talents, techno-geeks, etc.). But what are the main mechanisms that need to be put in place to benefit from an active middleground?
