Recent literature on the notion of the creative city provides a rich conceptual framework for understanding the importance of the “middleground” as an intermediary platform for the exchange of ideas, data and knowledge, connecting the formal entities of the “upperground” (companies, research departments, administrative units, etc.) with the informal collectives of the “underground” (informal communities, creative talents, techno-geeks, etc.).
